A few weeks ago a videoclip arrived for one of the best tracks from Gaye Su Akyol‘s 3rd album İstikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir (2018). And what a glorious surprise it was. Sumptuous colours, mighty facial close-ups and an oddly fantastic realisation of a psychedelic bus ride. Its when she steps out in her black cape, pink PVC thigh high boots and thrusts her oud sky-high to a meeting of electricity that we know its only getting crazier. The Istanbul born anthropologist gets compared looks wise to Bjork, but is world’s apart, geographically and musically. She wears her Byzantium roots all throughout her albums, but seems to be getting a bit more electronic influenced as she progresses.
Music video director Senan Tuncay has already directed a few Turkish pop videos over the last several years. In 2018 he knocked out 2 for Mabel Matiz. The carpet overloaded Sarmaşık and the more upbeat A Canim. He was also privileged enough to score visual duties for one of the queens of Turkish pop, the 65 year old Sezen Aksu and her 2017 hit Manifesto. He even crafts a perfect pop canvas for the Turkish Natalie Imbruglia lookalike Simge’s Öpücem.
